GEORGES DE FEURE (1868-1943) [SALON DES CENT / 5ME EXPOSITION.] 1894.
25 1/4x17 3/4 inches, 64x43 3/4 cm.
Condition B+: tape-staining in corners; creases and slight toning in margins; creases in upper image: hand-signed and numbered "36" by the artist in pencil. Paper.
De Feure was one of the masters of Art Nouveau, admired and collected for his mysterious, symbolic, decadent representations of women. De Feure's image for the Salon des Cent "with its modern, worldly and demonstrative female type, was in many respects a response to the idealized medievalising simplicity of Grasset's, which also portrayed a woman contemplating a flower" (De Feure p. 40). "The very gesture of her fingers and look in her eyes show that this is not a woman who passively waits for inspiration, but one who decides and acts" (De Feure p. 69). All of La Plume's Salon des Cent posters were available for sale to the public; regular copies were generally sold for 2.5 francs. They also produced deluxe editions on Japan paper or vellum that were signed by the artists and numbered (although no print run was ever specified, it is universally believed that the number was 50).
